SPACE – A Visual Journey

The universe is a never-ending source of fascination, inspiration and big questions. The exhibition SPACE – A Visual Journey explores the celestial frontier where artistic expression and scientific inquiry meet, and captures the grandeur of the cosmos through the eyes of astronomers and the interpretive visions of artists alike.

Through works by 14 different artists, we encounter questions like who we are in the face of eternity and when we leave our planet behind, what values we bring with us when we discover new worlds, and who has the right to dream about a future outside of Earth’s atmosphere.

Participating artists:

Rhiannon Adam (Ireland)

Mikael Owunna & Marques Redd (USA/Nigeria)

Mónica Alcázar-Duarte (Mexico)

Mackenzie Calle (USA)

Vincent Fournier (Burkina Faso)

Ivar Veermäe (Estonia)

UNBOUND: Art, Blackness & the Universe
Oct

to Aug 16

UNBOUND: Art, Blackness & the Universe

UNBOUND: Art, Blackness & the Universe is a groundbreaking exhibition that explores the intersections of Blackness and the cosmos. Curated by Key Jo Lee, MoAD’s Chief of Curatorial Affairs and Public Programs, the show invites visitors to reimagine Blackness not as fixed or earthbound, but as infinite—expansive, unknowable, and cosmically rich.

Inspired by Lee’s essay, “Gesturing Toward Infinitude: Painting Blue/Black Cosmologies,” the exhibition asks: What if we approached Blackness with the same wonder we bring to the universe? What if, like a black hole or distant star, Blackness could be a site of mystery, power, and transformation?

Featuring a global and intergenerational group of artists—including Lorna Simpson, Rashaad Newsome, Gustavo Nazareno, Harmonia Rosales, Didier William, and many more—the exhibition spans painting, sculpture, installation, and video. Works traverse the historical and the speculative, the scientific and the spiritual.

Three core themes guide the journey:

  • Geo-Cartographic: Blackness mapped across earthly and celestial terrains.

  • Religio-Mythic: Blackness as origin, cosmology, and creation story.

  • Techno-Cyborgian: Blackness as posthuman—shaped by technology, hybridity, and the ability to move fluidly between identities. The posthuman is not one fixed form, but an evolving state of becoming, capable of multiple perspectives.

More than an exhibition, UNBOUND is a philosophical inquiry and sensory experience. A rich array of public programs, an onsite learning lab, and the museum’s first community-written labels ensure depth and accessibility for all visitors.

Ultimately, UNBOUND invites us to wonder: What else can Blackness be? When freed from institutional constraints and historical reductiveness, Blackness becomes luminous—an expansive mode of being, a cosmology of creative potential. The show invites us not simply to observe, but to wonder. To stand at the edge of the known and look out—into the dark, where unbound possibility lives.

TEDxTallinn

TEDxTallinn

This year’s TEDxTallinn carries the title “Kõgõkogo” – a beautiful Võro word that embodies the cosmos and the entirety of existence. Everything is everything. But for us, space is not something distant or unattainable – it is within us just as well, in the end we ourselves are made of stardust. It is that paradoxical space where ideas are born, questions arise, and thoughts collide. “Kõgõkogo” is the courage to look into the vastness, to look further, but also to think deeper.

On one day, on one stage, we will bring together technology, education, and design – as is characteristic of TEDx – and add everything else that belongs under the notion of the universe: science, creativity, the human inner world, relationships, the power of silence. We do not offer ready-made answers, but rather seeds that may take root exactly where you least expect them. Everyone will find something here: a thought that lingers; a perspective that shifts your course.

The stage will welcome numerous guests from Estonia and beyond, but this year the program also brings a special addition: visitors will hear the reflections of artists featured in the major exhibition “SPACE – A Visual Journey” at Fotografiska. Brooke Holm, Rainbow Serpent (Marques Redd & Mikael Owunna), Cecilia Ömalm & Göran Östlin are just a few of the many names who will explore the cosmos and the future of humanity.

It is no coincidence that we gather on All Souls’ Day – a time when the boundaries between the visible and the invisible seem to fade. “Kõgõkogo” invites you to let your thoughts wander into places everyday life cannot reach. Sometimes the greatest discoveries are born precisely when you simply allow yourself to think.

PS! Talks will be held in both Estonian and English. All presentations will be simultaneously interpreted into both languages on site.

“Kõgõkogo” is inspired by Fotografiska’s exhibition SPACE – A Visual Journey.

William Villalongo: Myths and Migrations F L O C K

Join Marques Redd at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) on Saturday, June 7 at 2:00 PM for object lessons, a participatory event in conjunction with William Villalongo’s powerful exhibition, Myths and Migrations—FLOCK.

To flock is to gather and to cover. The event draws inspiration from both meanings: gathering together in a group and the velvety material known as flocking, a technique Villalongo frequently uses throughout the exhibition.

Over the course of 90 minutes, visitors will be guided through a series of thoughtful encounters with select artworks, led by a group of artists and scholars including Marques Redd, Mark Thomas Gibson, Lyra Monteiro, and Saya Woolfalk.

As part of the program, Marques Redd will present a talk entitled “Walking Through Worlds: Cosmology, Collage, and the Black Archive,” offering insights into his work. In conjunction with his talk, a photograph by Rainbow Serpent entitled The Four World Ages (III) will also be on display.

These “object lessons” invite participants to explore how the artworks activate a tangle of thoughts, memories, sensations, hopes, and frustrations. Visitors will be welcomed into the fold of Villalongo’s community of appreciators and encouraged to chart their own paths through themes of deep time, the contemporary moment, and possible futures held within the work.

Organized by William Villalongo and Sasha-Mae Eccelston, this program is free with museum admission and takes place at the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building at PAFA.

Seattle Black Film Festival

Rainbow Serpent is grateful to be part of this year’s Seattle Black Film Festival (SBFF) at the historic Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. For over twenty years, SBFF has been a space for deep reflection, creative exchange, and celebration of Black storytelling in all its forms.

On the final day of the festival, we will present a program titled "A Journey Through the African Cosmos," featuring two of our core film works: Blackstar Sanctuary and Obi Mbu (The Primordial House). These films emerge from our ongoing exploration of African cosmologies, ancestral memory, and speculative Black futures through multimedia storytelling.

Obi Mbu (The Primordial House) and Blackstar Sanctuary have screened at art institutions and festivals in the United States and abroad, including New York, California, Sweden, and Pennsylvania. This will be our first showing in Seattle.

Following the screening, Rainbow Serpent co-founder Marques Redd will offer reflections on the creative process and the cultural frameworks that shape our work.

For more than 30 years, London-based artist Ajamu X has unapologetically celebrated Black queer bodies, the erotic sense, and pleasure as activism. He has been at the forefront of genderqueer photography, challenging dominant ideas around masculinity, gender, sexuality, and the representation of Black LGBTQ+ people.

Ajamu’s evocative photographs present the lives and experiences of himself and those around him. From charged self-portraits to tender depictions of lovers, spirited images of friends to objects that his sitters use, The Patron Saint of Darkrooms foregrounds community through embracing a politics of pleasure.

The Water Spirit Will Take Us Home: The Story of Igbo Landing

  • Wesleyan College Leadership Lab (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This exhibition celebrates the story of Igbo Landing, its survival and evolution over time, and its enduring impact on African and African American art and culture. In 1803, a group of Igbo captives from Nigeria revolted aboard a slave ship in Dunbar Creek, St. Simons Island, Georgia. At least ten of them chose to drown rather than accept enslavement. The Gullah Geechee, descendants of enslaved West Africans, preserved this story of resistance through oral tradition.

Mikael Owunna's piece The Flying African from his Infinite Essence series is featured in this powerful exhibition. The work honors enslaved Africans who escaped captivity by taking flight, symbolically returning to their homeland and the primordial blackness from which all life emerged.

Marques Redd curated a selection of three paintings by South Carolina artist Jonathan Green from the Redd Family Art Collection for the show: Oyster Pickers, Yemassee Choir, and Fishing on the Trail.
