FIERCE: Pittsburgh

Photography

FIERCE: Pittsburgh is a collaborative photography project by renowned British photographer, activist, and scholar Ajamu X that celebrates the beauty, complexity, and cultural contributions of Pittsburgh’s Black LGBTQ community. Comprising thirteen large-scale palladium portraits created using nineteenth-century photographic processes, the exhibition places Pittsburgh within Ajamu’s growing international FIERCE archive, which also includes portraits made in London, Bristol, and Toronto.

The portraits were created during Ajamu X’s artist residency with Rainbow Serpent in April 2025, a period of intensive collaboration that brought one of the world’s foremost Black queer photographers into sustained dialogue with Pittsburgh’s artists, organizers, educators, healthcare professionals, and cultural leaders. The project marked several important milestones: it was Rainbow Serpent’s first international artist residency and culminated in Ajamu X’s first solo exhibition in the United States, introducing his work to American audiences through a new body of photographs rooted in Pittsburgh.

For more than three decades, Ajamu X has transformed portraiture into a practice of encounter. Rather than treating photography as documentation alone, his work understands portrait-making as an exchange rooted in trust, attentiveness, pleasure, and mutual recognition. Through the labor-intensive palladium printing process, each portrait acquires a distinctive material presence, connecting contemporary Black queer life with photography’s earliest histories while challenging the historical absence and misrepresentation of Black and queer bodies within the medium.

The project climaxed in an exhibition presented at the Silver Eye Center for Photography from March 5–May 2, 2026. Presented alongside these 13 portraits was Rainbow Serpent’s documentary Between Us, The Gaze: Ajamu X / FIERCE: Pittsburgh, which follows the creation of the portraits through behind-the-scenes footage and interviews; images from Ajamu X’s series A Sensual Chorus of Gestures; X (Nu/Apuat/Geb), Rainbow Serpent Co-Founders Redd and Owunna’s collaborative cosmological portrait of Ajamu X; and Owunna’s portrait Ajamu X created in dialogue with Ajamu’s own photographic style.
